My University Journey
From 2017 to now, I’ve had a wild university journey—three years of studying economics, one in Sydney, and two at the University of York in the UK. Now, I’m doing a master’s at drama school. Soon, my university journey is about to end as I finish my master’s. But before I transition from “student vlogs Dylan” to just Dylan and truly embark on the mission of adulthood in a few months, I’ve decided to take on the task of reviewing every university in the UK.
Welcome to Episode Three: University of Cambridge
Today, we are taking a look at the University of Cambridge. As you may or may not know, Cambridge is probably one of the most infamous universities in the world. It’s often considered the UK’s best university. In my recent poll, where 1,156 of you voted, we discovered that Cambridge was by far what we kind of thought was the best university in the UK according to that poll.
What Makes Cambridge Special?
Cambridge has a lot to live up to. We’ll be exploring the good, the bad, the campus, the rankings, the nightlife, and the culture at Cambridge to give you a massive rundown of what the university is like.
A Historic Institution
The University of Cambridge is known for being one of the most historic universities in the world. Founded in 1209, it’s still a hundred years younger than Oxford, but who cares, really? Imagine what they were learning about in 1209—I feel like I definitely would have gotten a first in a lot of things back then.
The Challenge of Getting In
Cambridge is also known for being one of the hardest universities to get into. With around 46,000 applications for 8,000 places, the acceptance rate is roughly 17%. This low rate partially comes from many people knowing they probably won’t get in and not applying.
Location and Rankings
Located in the east of England, below Peterborough and above London, Cambridge is often ranked number one in UK university league tables. In my own poll and tier list, it was also ranked the most respected university in the UK.
My Experience at Cambridge
I’ve visited Cambridge, including the business school, the union, and the colleges. I went punting, a classic activity where someone paddles you along the river, giving you a view of the historic colleges and buildings. The campus felt inspiring, clean, and very much like Cambridge.
Facilities and Campus Life
The Cambridge Business School facilities are top-notch. The atmosphere is clean and inspiring, and the campus is filled with historic architecture. Surprisingly, Cambridge doesn’t have an official tour video, which is disappointing for such a renowned university.
Tech-Focused City
Cambridge as a city is heavily tech-focused. If you study there, you could likely get a great job in the area after graduation, staying integrated with the university even after finishing your degree.
The Cambridge Clout
One of the perks of attending Cambridge is the respect and clout it carries, both online and offline. The Cambridge logo on anything, including YouTube videos, can propel your career forward faster.
The Infamous Interview Process
The Cambridge interview process is infamous. After your application is accepted, you’re invited to an interview where professionals assess your thought process and decide if you should be admitted. These interviews are tough and unique to Cambridge and Oxford.
Academics and Collegiate System
Cambridge offers a high academic standard with respected professors and significant funding. The collegiate system is another unique feature, fostering a sense of community and connection with alumni. Popular colleges like Trinity, St. John’s, and Jesus provide a traditional Cambridge experience.
Nightlife at Cambridge
While Cambridge isn’t known for its nightlife, it’s not as boring as some might think. The collegiate system enhances social opportunities, and the university hosts spectacular balls.
The People of Cambridge
Are Cambridge students boring? It’s hard to generalize, but the pressure of academia might limit social activities. However, you’ll always find great people at any university.
Final Thoughts
Cambridge University is historic, academically rigorous, and internationally respected. Whether you’re there for the clout, the academics, or the experience, it’s a university that leaves a lasting impression. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
